On Friday, we put together our class puzzle, a
visual reminder that in Room 23 we work together, including and respecting our
peers. We talked about how we’re each an important ‘piece of the puzzle.’
Thank you to all the creative parents and other
special people who helped the children decorate their puzzle piece. It was
lovely to hear the students having conversations about the people and things
that are special to them!
Congratulations
to Ava and Connor who were elected by their peers to be Student Councillors. I am certain they will wear their badges with pride and will do a
fantastic job representing our class at student council meetings. Well done!
In Maths,
we have commenced maths rotations and are very excited to have begun using our
new Pr1me books this week. The focus for the next few weeks is identifying and
continuing number patterns and understanding place value. We have been talking
about how an understanding of place value is useful in other areas of maths,
such as column addition. One of the students’ favourite maths activities is
playing ‘Sprint to 100’, where children roll a dice and collect ones. Once they
collect ten ones, the can trade them in for a 10. The first player to trade in
ten 10s is the winner!
In
Literacy, we have been revising nouns and verbs. In Guided Reading, we have
been using text and visual clues to help us make predictions before, during and
after reading. We have also been using editing symbols to proof read passages
for spelling and punctuation errors. In writing, we have been developing
success criteria for writing effective persuasive texts. This week, we have focused on the elements of a strong introduction.
Thank you
to all the parents who attended the Parent Information night held earlier this week.
It was lovely to see you again and to meet some of you for the first time. If
you have any further questions or queries, don't hesitate to make an
appointment. I am available most afternoons, except for Tuesdays.
I look
forward to a wonderful year working with you and your child.
On Friday
the 10th of February, we celebrated Aussie Day at Wattle Grove! It
was great to see the kids dressed up in their patriotic attire, all to raise
money for the Cancer Foundation. It was a tight squeeze but we managed to fit
the whole school (around 720 kids!) in the undercover area for our first whole
school assembly. In Room 23 we discussed the significance of the Australian
National Anthem and, in their teams, the children illustrated what each verse
meant to them.
Together
we read the story, ‘The Crayon Box That Talked.’ In this story the crayons have
a fight about which colour is the best but the soon realise that they need to
work together to help the child in the story make beautiful pictures. We talked
about how everyone in our class is unique and special and that every person
deserves to be treated with respect. The children then made a crayon for our
door display.
Welcome
back to school everybody! I trust you have all had a relaxing holiday break. I
always look forward to coming back to Wattle Grove Primary and it was lovely to
be greeted by so many happy faces on the first day of school. The children have
settled in well and are keen to learn lots of new things this year. I am
looking forward to working with you this year.
Please
check this page regularly to keep up to date with all the exciting things
happening in Room 23.
