Red Hill Waste Management Excursion

Our STEM problem for this semester is that lunches have been going mouldy and children have been throwing them out. The students have been investigating how heat changes the properties of things and considering ways we could reduce general waste.

Last week, we had a great time at the Red Hill Waste Management Centre and learnt lots of interesting facts. We hope you enjoy the photos below.

Book Week

Book week from Tasha

Hermione Granger, Batman, Where’s Wally, Room 24 had them all! Thanks so much for putting so much effort into costuming your children for the Book Week parade- they looked sensational! In class, we shared about our favourite book or character and then completed a book review, recommending it to others.

Book Swap

Last week, Wattle Grove held a very successful Book Swap. Thanks to all those families who donated. The students who participated were very excited to collect new books to love and enjoy!

Fire Safety Incursion

The Year Threes were very lucky to have a visit from the Welshpool Fire Brigade. They spoke about fire hazards in the home and ways these can be avoided. “A metre from the heater” and “Stay low and go, go. Go!” were key messages for ensuring safety. Does your family have a fire emergency plan? The students then got to look inside the fire truck- very exciting!

Cross Country

Congratulations to the students from Room 24 who were selected to participate in Cross Country this year. You did us very proud!

Congratulations

Congratulations to our Merit Award and Literacy Pro certificate winners from the last assembly. Most well deserved. Well done!

Making Jelly

This term in Science, we have been exploring the states of matter; solids, liquids and gasses. We made jelly to see how heating and cooling can cause chemical reactions. The crystals started as a solid. When boiling water was added, they became a liquid that could be poured, but when cooled, turned back to a solid! However, this solid looked quite different! We then wrote up the procedure and typed it during our ICT time. We are learning to use a Word Document and insert borders and change the font.

Science Week

In Week 4, we celebrated Science Week. It kicked off with a fantastic Science magic show, performed by the incredible Mr Sanderson. The students were not only entertained but learnt lots of cool science facts along the way!

We then had our Science Tabloids. All the activities were fun; exploding bags, bubble art and a challenge to see how much water could fit on a single coin!

Maths Update

In Maths, we have been learning to apply double and near double facts to more efficiently solve problems. Remember: we only use a ‘count on’ if we are adding or subtracting 1-3.

We have also been learning to write and compare fractions.

Some of the keen students in Room 24 have even been going to Numero Club, held at lunch time each Friday.

Writer of the Week

Congratulations to Gazal who wrote a fabulous persuasive text on why kids should have to do chores in our Cold Write. Here it is for your enjoyment!

Children Should Do Chores Around the House
By Gazal

Are you parents crazy? Don’t let your children sit back and relax- make them do chores around the house like vacuuming, mopping, wiping windows, raking the leaves, cleaning dog poop and dusting. In this way, they get exercise and don’t get bored. Also, parents get to sit back and relax.

Clearly, if you do chores you get exercise. If you have a dog, ask your kids to walk it. By walking a dog you are doing a chore and getting fit also.

Furthermore, if kids are bored and have nothing to do, well, doing chores keeps you busy so you don’t get bored. So far, Malcom Turnball agrees with me.

Last of all, parents can relax. Imagine, your kids doing chores and you sitting back and relaxing, watching a movie. How nice would that be after you’ve spent hours at work?

In conclusion, kids should do chores because they get fit, don’t get bored and parents can sit back and relax for they are tired. So I command you to make your kids do chores now!

Literacy Review

In English we have been learning about apostrophes for contractions and ownership, procedure writing, open and closed syllables and how these affect our spelling choices and inferring from visual texts. The warm up below contains some of the concepts we have been revising.

Reading Block

The children have been enjoying shared reading each day. We have read a fiction text, ‘Harry McFarr’s Clunker Car’ and a poem, ‘The Blob Fish’. The students made an ‘Inside, Outside Circle’ to share their predictions about each text and connect with their own knowledge. We have been focussing on applying the following reading comprehension strategies; predicting, connecting, creating images, self-questioning and monitoring.

These are the wonderful ‘Wow Words’ the children found. They worked in their learning teams, using the dictionary to find the definitions.

Sustainability

This term, Wattle Grove is holding a Spring Flower Pot competition. The students enjoyed planting some beautiful seedlings and thinking about ways they could decorate our class pot. The flower pots will be judged at the end of term.
