Stem Challenge

In Science we have been learning about states of matter and how heating and cooling affects the properties of materials. The children have now been busy working in their teams to design, make and test a lunch box, aiming to keep an ice brick frozen, when heat is applied. We have conducted simple experiments to test the effectiveness of different materials and learnt about the concepts of reflection, conduction and insulation. The students are looking forward to a sunny day to test their lunchboxes and measure their success. This information will then be used to design their own lunch box.

HASS Update

In History, we have been learning about games and entertainment from the past. After playing a competitive game of Quoits, we learnt to play elastics. This was not only a lot of fun, but it also got our hearts pumping! In the holidays, I have challenged the children to see if they can find a board game to play with their family on the weekend/in the holidays, rather than electronic one.

We also celebrated WA Day. The students researched Esperance- Goldfields region, completed a cloze activity and also wrote poems about WA, which are displayed on our WOW Wall.

Maths Update

In Maths, we have been learning about measurement. We learnt how to use a ruler to accurately measure various objects and convert units of measurement. We have also been using our grid books to learn about area. We have been using these skills to solve some real life problems.

Literacy Update

In Reading Block this term, we have been studying some different genres of writing and their special features. We’ve looked at narratives, procedures, explanations, poetry and biographies. I’ve been so pleased with the way the students have been making personal connections with the text and working hard to use clues in the text to make inferences. Featured below are the students synthesising the main ideas from an informative text about plants.

In writing, we have been creating poems, incorporating different parts of speech. Last week, the students made acrostic poems about themselves. They then published these to look like rainbows, which are hanging in our classroom. Josephine did an excellent job of incorporating rhyme and figurative language.

Joyfully as can be,
One, two three, I am me.
Special as busy bee in a hive.
Elegant as a swimmer doing a dive.
Perfect as a bird,
High voices being heard.
Intelligent at dancing,
Neat at prancing.
Extraordinary as gold.

Typing Club

In ICT lessons, we have been developing our touch typing skills and applying these to publish our writing. Each student has a Typing Club account, which can be accessed via the link below:

https://wgpsroom14busybees.typingclub.com/

To log in, students just have to enter their first name with no capital letter and click the blue 'Login' button. This is a great way for the students to learn to get to know the keyboard and develop quick typing skills.

Happy typing!
