This
week, we studied Helen Keller. She was a girl born deaf and blind, whose
determination to communicate with other was inspiring. Despite her disability,
Helen changed the lives of many through her public speeches and demonstration
of kindness. “The best and most beautiful
things cannot be seen or even touched- but must be felt with the heart.”
The students brainstormed what this might mean and concluded that perhaps Helen
was referring to things like love and kindness. I think they might be on the
right track!
The
students enjoyed this task. If your child is interested, I read the students
this story from the book, Good Night
Stories for Rebel Girls. There is also a version for boys called, Boys Who Dare To Be Different.

NAIDOC Week
Last
Thursday, we celebrated NAIDOC Week. This is a celebration that recognises the
culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Islander people. The students got to
listen to an interesting presentation about how the Aboriginal people find
water in the desert. Did you know that you are able to tell if there’s water by
the presence of ants? Ants can only make tunnels in damp soil. So, if you see
ants, dig underground and you will find water! In the afternoon, we joined up with our Year 2
buddies to make Aboriginal flags.
Welcome Back to Term 3
Welcome
back for Semester Two. I hope everyone had a lovely break and are recharged and
ready to go for what is sure to be a busy term ahead.
The
students have settled into their new Kagan teams, which they will be in for the
first 5 weeks. It is always fun to discover new things about each other. We
made a class graph, depicting our favourite holiday activity and then turned
this into a comic, as we have been learning about sequencing in our Reading
Block over the last 2 weeks. We have been working on interesting ways to write
a recount, experimenting with onomatopoeia and dialogue to “hook” the reader.
In
Morning Fitness, the students have been practising team games with the other
Year 3 classes, in preparation for the Sports Carnival which will be held later
in the term. Co-operation and good sportsmanship have been the focus of these
sessions.
In the afternoons, we have started exploring the properties of different materials and how these can change when we apply heat. We have also been practising our touch typing skills using Tying Club (link and log in details are in your child’s homework folder).
In HASS, we have been looking at democracy and how this is evident even within our own classroom! We have talked about different styles of voting and held a secret ballot to elect our new Student Councillors!
In Health, we have been exploring different kinds of drugs and how to use medications safely.

Goodbye Miss McKercher
A
special thank you to our EDU pre-service teacher, Miss McKercher, for all your
efforts in Term 2. The students and I have enjoyed having you and we hope that
your experience in Room 24 was a memorable and rewarding one. All the best as
you complete your studies and for your future teaching career.
To
celebrate their final day, Miss McKercher and Miss Preston (from Room 26)
organised a fun maths and literacy competition. The Year 3s and 4s joined
forces to complete lots of challenging and fun activities.

STEM Project- Habitat Dioramas
This
term the students have been studying biology and learning to classify animals,
according to their characteristics. Animals make adaptations to survive in
their environment. For example, some animals camouflage. Students were given
the challenge of creating a jungle, arctic, pond, garden, underground or ocean
habitat. Their model had to include living, non-living, once living and
products of living things. The students’ models were OUTSTANDING! To celebrate,
we had a “Gallery Walk” where students could appreciate the hard work of their
peers.
