Just a reminder that there is no school for the students tomorrow. Wishing every one a safe and happy Easter break. To those travelling to exciting places, remember to take lots of photos and perhaps even keep a journal, to remember all the fun you've had. I'm looking forward to reading lots of books in the holidays!
I look forward to seeing everyone back again in Term 2!
Thanks for all your support,
Miss B

ANZAC Assembly
We acknowledge ANZAC Day on the 25th of April every year. We have one minute silence if silence to show our respect for the soldiers that died at war. People wear poppies as a symbol of remembrance of the men that risked their lives for us. ~Mia
ANZAC Day is important to us because we remember soldiers who died fighting in Gallipoli in the first World War. We wear red poppies as a symbol of remembrance. ~Noel
We remember soldiers who died fighting in Gallipoli in the first World War. The soldiers fought for our country, bravely. It's a time when we reflect and remember. ~Kate
ANZAC Day is important to us because the soldiers fought for us. We still remember them, even if they died for their country. We have one minute silence on ANZAC Day. ~Parker

Early Close Tomorrow
Just a reminder that students will finish school at 12:00 pm tomorrow, due to parent interviews. Students will still need to bring their recess, but will not require lunch.
Thanks for your co-operation and I look forward to meeting with many of you tomorrow afternoon.

Homework Week 10
Due to the short week, there will be no homework given this week. Students are encouraged to continue to read regularly in the holidays and to have a go at some of the NAPLAN Practice Questions available on the public demonstration site below:

Talk Homework
This week will be a cold write narrative so there will be no Talk Homework. We have been discussing simple plots, such as– good guy vs bad guy, lost/stolen and found, broken and fixed etc.
Reading Superstars
Congratulations to all the students who have recently
received Literacy Pro Awards. In only 5 weeks, our class has read nearly 1000
000 words! What a sensation effort. The school holidays are a great opportunity
to be reading lots of books and doing quizzes. Congratulations to Terry for
earning his Bronze Certificate at assembly, after completing 100 quizzes!
Maths Update
In Maths, we have been exploring fractions. Fractions are
equal parts of a whole. We worked with pretend chocolate bars to demonstrate
that a whole can be divided into fractions (equal pieces). We have also been
writing simple fractions. The denominator geos on the bottom. This is the total
number of pieces. The numerator goes on top and is the part that is shaded. Remember: Ned rides the Donkey. We have
been comparing fractions with common numerators. The bigger the denominator,
the smaller the fraction because it is being divided into more pieces. I have
been encouraging the students to identify fractions in everyday life (ie, we
tell time in quarters, we rule our page in half sometimes). It would be great
to see this encouraged at home also.
Nifty Narratives
Last week, we started our unit of work on narratives with a
cold write. We then looked at a range of fairy tales in our teams and
identified the characters, setting, problem and resolution. Our goal has been
to recognise how tension is created by the author by slowly building the
problem. Miss B showed us this with balloons. The problem starts small and, as
a reader, you don’t feel very worried, but as the problem gets bigger (and
bigger) you start to feel nervous about what will happen next. Luckily, the
main character always solves the problem and there is usually a happy ending.
Earth and Space
Over the last few weeks, we have been studying how the earth, sun and moon work together. We enjoyed the beautiful Autumn sunshine, demonstrating this in groups of three. Some of our more enthusiastic ‘Earths’ got very dizzy after spinning too fast on their axis! In their learning teams, students also worked together to demonstrate how the earth revolving the sun, causes day and night.

Harmony Day
Last Friday, we celebrated Harmony Day. We dressed up in our
national costumes and had a special parade in the Undercover Area. Thanks to
all the parents for your efforts- the students looked amazing! The art
installation organised by Miss Randall was, as usual, a beautiful sight. This
year, a collection of beautiful harmony butterflies. In class, we read a book
called ‘This Love,’ which was about celebrating cultural diversity. Here are
some of our reflections about what Harmony Day means to us.
Creating Images
In Reading Block, we have been practising visualising
(creating mental images based on the words we read). We read an intriguing poem
about a mysterious house and illustrated what we pictured after reading each
stanza. Our work is currently displayed on the WOW wall in our classroom.
Space Station
One the students’ favourite spaces in the classroom is the Space Explorer Station. Each day two lucky students are selected to study our wonderful solar system. There are interactive games, space pictures to view and new facts to learn from the selection of special space books. Pictured below are some of the students enjoying their visit!
