In Maths, we have been exploring fractions. Fractions are
equal parts of a whole. We worked with pretend chocolate bars to demonstrate
that a whole can be divided into fractions (equal pieces). We have also been
writing simple fractions. The denominator geos on the bottom. This is the total
number of pieces. The numerator goes on top and is the part that is shaded. Remember: Ned rides the Donkey. We have
been comparing fractions with common numerators. The bigger the denominator,
the smaller the fraction because it is being divided into more pieces. I have
been encouraging the students to identify fractions in everyday life (ie, we
tell time in quarters, we rule our page in half sometimes). It would be great
to see this encouraged at home also.
