Well, Term 4 is well under way and what a busy and exciting
time it has been!
In Literacy, we have been refining our reading comprehension
skills, inferring meaning from a range of written and visual texts. The
strategy we have been working on is scanning. When scanning we read quickly through
a text, searching for key details and information. The kids have been doing a
great job of this and were excited to showcase their skills to some visitors
from a public school in Bunbury.
We have also been learning to read some more challenging phonics
sounds and have been learning about the meaning that prefixes and suffixes hold
in words. We have been revising the spelling of learnt digraphs and trigraphs
and application of spelling rules. In grammar, we have been deconstructing sentences,
breaking them into their various parts of speech. In writing, we have revised recounts,
persuasive texts and narratives, with a focus on ‘Sizzling Starts.’ We have
also been attempting to use descriptive language and punctuation to create emotion.
In Mathematics we have been working on our measurement
skills. We have had an opportunity to apply some of our mental maths and number
skills to convert units of measurement. I have also taught the students to play
the game Numero. This is a great game for students to apply their number
skills and they are now getting very clever and strategic when playing in pairs.
In Science, we have been working on our investigating skills.
The students are also busily thinking of a topic for their Super Scientist report,
which they will need to prepare for the class challenge in Week 5. Please check
your child’s homework folder for more information. The students will need to
have decided on their topic by the end of Week 4, there will be a sheet going up
on the classroom door for them to record this.
In HASS, we have started our unit on Civics & Citizenship.
We have been looking at how democratic decisions are made at a local, state and
federal level and how these bring about change in our community.
As well as revising important key learning concepts, the
students have been developing and exercising the entrepreneurial skills, promoting
and designing their stall for the student fete. They have also been
participating enthusiastically in ballroom dancing lessons and learning a hip-hop
routine to showcase later in the year. Stay tuned. Room 14 will also be
attending swimming lessons in Weeks 7 & 8 and forms will be distributed in
the near future. A big congratulations to Josh, Liam and Griffin who received
awards for being in the Top 5 Most Improved category for the Year 3 Principal’s
Challenge. Terry was in also acknowledged for being in the Top 5, with an
amazing score of 69/70. We are very proud of you boys!
