Faction Carnival

This Friday is the Year 1-6 Athletics Carnival. Students are reminded to come dressed in their faction shirt. There is to be no zinc or hairspray brought to school. The students will be eating recess in their bays, so please ensure they have snacks in their bag. They will be able to eat lunch with their families and will then return to their bays on the siren. A reminder that jackets, hats and drink bottles must be labelled clearly with your child’s name, to ensure items are not lost. We can’t wait!

Cross Country

Is the next Usain Bolt in our mix?

Well done to the students who represented Room 23 in last week’s Cross Country event. Their endurance was most admirable. The rest of us had a great time cheering you on.

Literacy Pro

Year 3 students are encouraged to choose books at their current Lexile Level to read and regularly complete quizzes online. They can read books a level below or above their colour. If they are not successful upon completion of a quiz, they are encouraged to try it again the next day. They can have the book with them when taking the quiz. This is a great program and promotes the development of skills such as scanning a text for details, understanding language conventions and making inferences. Congratulations to Elijah who earnt his blue certificate at the last assembly. A fabulous effort. Keep reading!

Congratulations

Congratulations to Kalani, Ava and Saxon who achieved Merit Awards at our last Senior Assembly. These students have certainly exhibited the Term 3 value of diligence and should be proud of their efforts.

Maths Update

This term, we have been focusing on multiplication and division. It is expected that by the end of Year 2 students know their 2, 5 and 10 times tables and additionally, their 3 and 4 times tables by the end of year 3. They need to be regularly practising these, to foster automaticity.

Olympics

We have been having lots of fun over the last few weeks researching the Olympic Games, comparing the Ancient and Modern Olympics, finding out more about the symbolism of the rings, torch and mascots and finding out more information about the host country, Brazil. The students are working on interactive research posters and have engaged enthusiastically in the processes involved.

Wonderful Writers

The students have been learning to proofread and refine their work during our weekly writing sessions. In pairs, they have been analysing exemplar texts, scanning them for ‘Effective Points’ and ‘Improvement Points.’ It has been great to see the students applying some of the effective strategies to their own writing. They are now working towards producing a published copy of their persuasive text about who is the best athlete in the world. I can’t wait to see the finished products!

Lapathon 2016

On August 12, Wattle Grove had its annual “’iRun for iPads” Lapathon. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. The P & C did a tremendous jobs setting up the tracks. Also a special thank you to Leeanne and Camille for helping me at the stamping station. The students in Room 23 gave their best effort, with some students running nearly 50 laps! The money is now due back to school so that totals can be calculated and much anticipated prizes distributed.

NAIDOC Week Celebrations

On Thursday, August 5, Room 23 participated in an incursion that was both informative and engaging. They were able to view some artefacts that are significant to the Aboriginal community and learn some of the native language. The students then performed the NAIDOC song they have been learning in music at a whole school assembly, which celebrated diversity. In class, we read the Dreamtime story ‘How the Birds Got Their Colours.’ The students then illustrated an alternate ending to the story. The work they produced was amazing! We are now working on writing some fitting captions for our masterpieces. Make sure you pop in and look at these fantastic pieces.

Congratulations

Congratulations to our new Student Councillors for Semester 2, Zanetta and Shajin. These students were selected by their peers as being exemplary role models in the classroom and I’m sure they will do a great job. A special thank you to Luke and Shayla for being such fine Student Councillors in Semester One. We appreciate the hard work and leadership skills you displayed.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to school for Term 3. The year is flying by! As well as learning new skills across the learning areas, the students have begun training for the School Athletics Carnival, which will be held later this term.

As the winter weather is upon us, please check that your child’s jackets and hats are clearly labelled with their first and last name.
