Cold Write

Dear Parents,

Tomorrow is a cold write narrative assessment. This means that the students will not see the topic prior to the Big Write session. There is no Talk Homework tonight, although you may wish to revise the structure of a narrative with your child to help them feel prepared.

Aussie Day Parade

On Friday, February 12, we celebrated Australia Day at Wattle Grove Primary School to raise funds for the victims of the recent Yarloop bushfire. Over $2100.00 was raised, a tremendous effort. The students in Room 23 looked fabulous in their Aussie costumes. Thank you for your generous donations and for supporting this worthy cause.

Author's Corner

Last week's Big Write topic was 'The Strange Egg.' There were so many creative narratives but the Writer of the Week was Elijah, with his terrific tale of a most mysterious egg. Have a read below!

THE MYSTERIOUS EGG
Welcome to the underground world, where an (unknown) egg lives. In the Earth’s core is the hottest planet of them all! Did you know that not one person in the galaxy knows about the egg?

As the clock struck twelve, BANG! An earth quake! So I went out to the garden but nothing was there so I dawdled back to bed. Suddenly, CRACK! A yellow, striped egg, was stuck on a rock so I moved it. OH NO! The egg raced down the hill like a Ferrari but it smashed! My window, it cracked…

10 seconds later, a duck head, giraffe neck, emu wings, dolphin tail, creature, I thought to myself then an idea flew into my brain, I will feed it tuna sandwiches and he loved it, but there’s only problem…MORE EGGS!!!

5 years later, the bird flew in the lovely breeze, but I saw a pink polka dot egg in the fluffy, puffy cloud. What is going to happen?

Literacy Update

The children have settled in well to the routines of Literacy Rotations. These are held each morning from 9:00-10:30 and incorporate phonics, reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and printing. A highlight of each week is the VCOP Big Write, where the students get a chance to showcase the vocabulary and grammar and punctuation skills that they have practised throughout the week.

Below are students engaged in sharing their planning with their peers around the topic "The Strange Egg."

Author's Corner

I have been most impressed the progress the students have made in writing this year! The VCOP Big Write topic for this week was Christmas themed. There were lots of brilliant, entertaining narratives produced but Room 12 agreed that Lilly's was one of the best. Below is her work for your enjoyment.

The Wake Up on Christmas Eve ~ Lilly (Year 2)

"Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas!" yelled Santa, in his jolly voice.  He was just about to land on the roof tops in Brook Road. But then, all of a sudden... Crash! The sleigh went down into the middle of the street. Jemma and Emma, Carly and Jake, Anna and Stella all woke up from the crash. Even the pets woke up! They all rushed out to the middle of the street. "Santa!: they called out, surprised and excited. "Oh dear. Oh dear. Why do these reigns always get tied up?" muttered Santa. "Oh no! Children!" Never mind, their parents will never believe them.

Santa, today  (or should I say tonight) was no longer jolly. He still had his big, red, fluffy coat and hat but his face had fallen. Presents had gone everywhere (which the elves were trying to clean up) and the reign were tangled (which had caused the crash). "We'll help you!" cried the kids, more excited now. All the girls' hair was messy and they were all in their favourite pjs. "Oh all right," replied Santa, a little while later.

It was a hot, Aussie night and the flying cows were tired. It smelled of fresh air and you could hear the fans from inside the bedrooms because the windows were open. All you could see was the bright, silver moon hung over a pillow of fluffy clouds.

"So what can we do Santa?" the kids asked.
"Well," he hesitated, "You can give the flying cows some hay while the elves get the reigns untied." But then, the flying cows took off!

They went whizzing through the sky. "Woo hoo! Yeah!" they mooed. But then, "Arghhh! We're falling!" they mooed again. They could talk? The kdis burst out laughing. They hadn't got very far. They raced a street and found them....in the middle of the street!

And just in case you're wondering, the cows were fine! Also, the children get extra presents from Santa. And Santa was right, their parents didn't believe them.

The end.

Christmas Creations

With the money the students raised from their 'Sensational Slushy' stall, earlier this year, the students purchased air dry modelling clay. They had lots of creative fun, carefully crafting their Christmas clay master pieces.

This very clever little ornament was designed and created by Daniel and was admired by students and teachers alike!

2015 Reflections

This week, I gave the students a sample of their writing from Term 4 last year, to compare with Term 4 this year. The students couldn't believe how much they had improved and were very proud of themselves, as I am of them.

Aliyah (Year 2):

"I have improved my writing by using paragraphs instead of having a big blob of writing on the page."

Muzafer (Year 3):

"I have improved my writing by checking it makes sense and adding more sentences into my paragraphs."
