Author's Corner

In writing, this term we have been working on developing our writer's voice. An important aspect of this is being able to "hook" your reader and build tension and intrigue. The students have been doing a fantastic job of making their writing start with a "sizzle". Keep up the great work, Room 14!

A GIANT Problem ~Mehrry
Genre: Narrative
The flame of the candle reflected upon all of the hundreds and thousands of books, It was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. It felt like a fairy tale.

The Swing ~Oscar
Genre: Narrative
I was on my swing, getting higher and higher.

What a Mess! ~Maya
Genre: Narrative
The next morning, not to my surprise, her room was...a mess! I knew today was going to be a horrible day already. I had to feed the dog, clean the kitchen, make the beds, cook dinner, do the washing and, last but not least, I now needed to clean Molly's filthy room!

Hero Award- My Robot ~Amelia
Genre: Persuasive
Beep, Beep, Beep! Imagine having a robot to help you when you need it. My robot deserves a hero award because he comes when you need him, keeps you safe at night and is always friendly to people.

Hero Award-Goku ~Elija
Genre: Persuasive
Surely you would agree that the strongest person alive deserves a hero award? Imagine flying 50 ft high in the clouds. Goku always defends the universe. This is what makes Goku the most powerful being in the cosmos!

Hero Award- Queen Elizabeth ~Jessmary
Genre: Persuasive
Imagine a Queen that is as beautiful as a crystal dolphin. Yes, you guessed it- Queen Elizabeth the Second. She should get a hero award because she is helpful, cares about us and knows what to do when there is an emergency somewhere.

Saving Energy ~Terry
Genre: Persuasive
Imagine a world with no- not even one, little pixel of energy! Unfortunately, this is the very result of wasting energy that is coming to the weird and wonderful future. Dr U. Save clearly states that average families waste 64.8% of energy. As already stated, we need to use less energy because it's not all renewable and sometime, in the future, we'll be back to the ol' fashioned oil lamp and candle. If we turned off unattended lights, we would save a stupendous deal of energy.

NAPLAN

All Year 3 and 5 students will be sitting NAPLAN testing in Weeks 3 & 4. This year, students will be doing the test online, which is very exciting! We have been doing some practice NAPLAN questions in class and I have been extremely proud of the way the children have applied themselves. Please note that no homework will be given over these two weeks, however, students are still encouraged to read every day.

Here are a few things you can do to support your child at home.

-Please ensure they have plenty of sleep the night before
-In the mornings having a healthy, nutritious breakfast is also beneficial
-Encourage them to give it their absolute best
- Discuss any feelings and emotions they have coming up to and after the tests

Below is the NAPLAN timetable:
Please ensure your child is present for each test, as a catch-up test may not be possible, due to time constraints. There will be test conditions once each test has commenced and no movement in or out of the classroom, to avoid disruptions.

I am sure that each child is going to give the test their best effort. It is a fantastic opportunity to see where your child sits in relation to other children around Australia.

Mother's Day Wishes

Happy Mother’s Day to all our lovely mums. We hope you had a great day and loved all the special gifts. Thanks for all you do!

Dress Fancy Friday

Thanks for all your support with this event. The students in Room 14 were looking very fancy indeed! As a school we raised close to $800 which will go towards the Year 6 Graduation gift to the school.

Year Level Challenge

Congratulations to Terry and Parker on their results in last term’s Year Level Challenge. Both boys did extremely well and were in the Top 5 of all the Year Three students. Well done!

Term 2 Update

Hi everyone,

Welcome back to Term 2!

The first two weeks have flown by and the students have all got to work straight away, which has been very pleasing.

We have been busy revising key literacy and numeracy concepts, in preparation for the NAPLAN testing, which will be taking place in weeks 3 & 4. In Literacy, we have been practising applying a range of comprehension strategies to gain meaning from different text genres. In writing, we have been revising he structure of narrative and persuasive texts and brainstorming ways we can “hook” our audience. Did you know you only have about 6 seconds to gain a reader’s attention? In Maths, we have been looking at mental maths strategies that can be used to answer number problems, such as open number lines, landmark numbers and double facts. We have also been revising 2D and 3D shapes and calculating the area and volume of shapes and objects.

In HASS, this Term we will be exploring Australia’s geographic “neighbours” and explore the lifestyles and traditions of people living in these countries.

In Science, students will be investigating shadows and the impact that the movement of the Earth around the sun has on these. The students will also be doing an in-class research project on a planet of choice. Please note that the annual Super Science Competition will be taking place mid-term, so the next few weeks are a great time to start thinking about and preparing a simple experiment to share with the class. The winner will be chosen based on their understanding of the science concepts behind the experiment, but also on their confidence and showmanship.

In Health, we will be learning about road safety and applying the concepts to real life scenarios.

We are in for a busy but exciting Term!

Kind regards,

Miss B
