Geography

Students have been working on their mapping skills in HASS and are trying to memorise the states and territories and capital cities of Australia. They have been researching facts about each one and identifying and labeling them on a map. The slides below include some of the key vocabulary and content.

International Women’s Day

On Friday, March 8, it was International Women’s Day. We read a story called “We are Girls,” based on true stories of inspiring women. Here are some of the women that inspire us:

💓 My Mum because she always tells me to never give up. ~Elija

💓 My Grandma because she loves birds and I love drawing them. ~Maya

💓 My Nan because this Christmas she's taking us to Bussleton. ~Legacy

💓 The Roman goddess, Venus, inspires me because she is persuading everyone to show love. ~Mia

💓 My Mum because she tells me to be my best and do my best. ~Amelia

💓 Malala because she stood up for education- Mehrry

💓 Maya Angelou because she is very kind to people. ~Joshua

In the Garden

Last Friday, we buddied up with Miss Gibbon’s Year Threes to plant some veggies in our garden. We planted silver beet, lettuce and carrot seeds. We hope they grow healthy and strong!

Earth & Space Science

BLAST OFF! We have begun our journey into outer space this week, with a mysterious spinning object making its way into the classroom. We activated our prior knowledge and learnt and explored the meaning of some key vocabulary:
Orbit
Dwarf Planets
Asteroids
Comets

We also learnt a fun rhyme to help us remember the order of the planets. We read the fun story, “Pluto’s Secret” and learnt a lot about the history of space exploration. Did you know that Pluto is no longer identified as a planet? This was only decided by astronomers in 2006. The slides below show some of the key content we have covered so far.

All About Me Speaking & Listening Task

The students enjoyed giving a short oral presentation, introducing themselves to their peers. The focus was on developing their formal public speaking skills and learning to speak to a time limit. The students were given feedback from their peers and teacher and did a great job answering the questions asked of them. The students identified speaking loudly and clearly as strength and making eye contact more consistently with the audience as an area to work on for next time. Well done, Room 14.

Class Meeting

Last week, our Student Councillors had their very first meeting. In their learning teams, students discussed issues around the school and brainstormed ideas that might help to create a happier, safer school environment. The students in Room 14 voted on the idea of spreading more kindness and what that might look like in action. I was so proud of the way the students conducted themselves, taking on their roles with responsibility and commitment. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their public speaking skills, ability to solve problems and to resolve conflicts democratically.

Special thanks to the students who ran our first class meeting:
Noel: Chairperson
Mehrry- Recorder
Abi- Observer
Liam- Timekeeper

Cold Write

Please note that tomorrow will be a Cold Write. Students are encouraged to revise features of a successful persuasive text such as an opinion, clear reasons, examples and explanations and a call for action. Other techniques include false statistics, rhetorical questions and imagery. They might also like to brainstorm alternative words for common words such as good and bad. Room 14, I can't wait to read your written pieces!
