Learning at Home

In the light of recent events, the Education Department has set up an online site called ‘Learning at Home,’ for those at home during these times. Resources are available across all year levels and many learning areas. Please find the link on the Wattle Grove Blog.

In addition, I have set up some online activities that the students can access.

Study Ladder- I have put up some activities that revise concepts we have covered in Term 1.

Follow the links below:

Year 2

https://www.studyladder.com.au/myschool/6079/myclass/1190509

Year 3

Typing Club- Use you first name to log in. Work on your touch typing skills, ready to impress us when you return!

Writing Activities – Writing can be a fun way to pass the time. Remember to plan your text before you write, and edit and up level when you have finished. Ask a member of your family to read your text and give you feedback. Pobble365 is a fantastic website to help with your narrative writing. Or, perhaps you would like to keep a diary or gratitude journal.

Times Tables – Keep practising your times tables and challenge others at your house!

Other fun things:

Science/STEM

Art

Check in regularly at the WGPS blog. There are a lot of links that will direct you to a number of educational sites.

Remember – wash your hands frequently, distance yourself from others and stay home as much as you can.

Look after yourselves, stay safe and show kindness to others in this uncertain time.

Thanks for all your support,

Miss B

HASS Update

In HASS we have been investigating various celebrations and commemorations that are observed around the world. The students worked in teams, using non-fiction texts and child-friendly search engine “Kiddle” to find answers to the questions they had developed. The students are now working on completing their published information report. Here is some exceptional work completed by Josephine, Drasika and Tahlia.

Visualising

This week’s reading strategy was Creating Images. This is where we paint a picture in our mind of what we are reading. Over Week 7, we read a poem about a haunted house. We talked about how the author has used descriptive language to give the reader a curious feeling about the house and why it was abandoned. As we read the poem, we drew what we pictured in our minds and then shared, using a Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up.

Wow Writing

Last week, we concluded our unit on persuasive writing. I was very impressed with the student’s efforts in their timed Cold Write. The students then teamed up with a “Breakdown Buddy” to edit and refine their work and set goals. They were given a star and a wish and highlighted the VCOP elements they had included in their chosen paragraph. This term we have been focusing on the importance of learning to independently edit and refine our written work.

Vocabulary

When reading, we need to monitor as we go, checking we understand what words mean. Any unknown words can become roadblocks to our comprehension. We have been identifying tricky words in texts and working in our home teams to consult the dictionary and make sense of these words. Some of our words are:

Filthy
Ruined
Affection
Nickname
Antique

Vocab from Tasha

Buddy Reading

This term, we have been working on improving our oral reading. Effective oral readers not only decode words well, but also pay careful attention to the punctuation in texts, reading with expression and intonation. After library each Thursday, students share in Buddy Reading. They read a page from their book, focusing on their fluency. Their partner then gives them a rating out of 3 and they celebrate their success.

It's a 3/3 from Raihannee

Class Meetings

Last week, our Student Councillors had their very first meeting. In their learning teams, students discussed issues around the school and brainstormed ideas that might help to create a happier, safer school environment. The students in Room 14 voted on the idea of spreading more kindness and what that might look like in action. I was so proud of the way the students conducted themselves, taking on their roles with responsibility and commitment. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their public speaking skills, ability to solve problems and to resolve conflicts democratically.

Thank you to the students who took on special roles at the Class Meeting-

Time Keeper- Kumayl

Science Update

In Science, we have been learning about materials and their properties. These photos are from a fun lesson where the students were deciding whether the clothing items were made from natural or man-made materials.

Here are the key learning points:
Materials can be natural or man-made.
Natural materials are found in the environment. We may have to dig them out of the ground, grow them or pull them off living things.
Man-made materials are natural materials that are changed through chemical processes of ‘man’.

The students have also been developing a bank of scientific language vocabulary words. In their learning teams they have been sorting pictures of objects, looking for links/differences.

Senior Assembly

At the last Senior Assembly, Drasika, Jacob and Indiannah received Merit Awards. Our class also won the Tidy Bag Award. Way to go, Room 14!

Parents, please not that assemblies have been cancelled until further notice. Merit Award winners will receive their awards from Miss Roberts in the undercover area, without the rest of the school in attendance. This ensures that we are complying with the mass gatherings guidelines.

Literacy Pro

The Year 3s have been smashing their reading goals, having read close to 1 000 000 words this term! A number of students have achieved their certificates and are congratulated on their efforts.

All About Me

The students did a fantastic job sharing some information about themselves with the class. I was blown away with their level of preparation and professionalism. The students kept each other accountable, asking their audience questions to check that they were listening carefully. At the end, we reflected on the presentations, using the Star and a Wish framework. Volume and expression were areas that scored well, while maintaining eye contact and adding in some gestures were area to work on for next time. Thanks to all the parents and caregivers who helped the students prepare for this task.

It’s the PR1ME time for Maths!

In Maths we have been playing a number of interactive games to consolidate the students’ skills. We have been working on our Mental Maths skills and the students have also been learning how to play Numero. The students have also been enjoying their maths rotations and were very excited to receive their Pr1me books this week. These books are the core component of our program. If you have not yet paid for your child’s books, payment can be made at the front office. Thanks for your support with this.

New Kagan Teams

In Week 6, the students moved into new collaborative learning teams. After writing a letter of thanks to their previous shoulder partner, the students were excited to get to know their new team and get a new spot on the mat. Pictured below are some of the students with their feedback sheets, which get stuck into their Victory Books.

From Miss B

Given this time of change and uncertainty, it seems a wonderful time to share some of the positive things that have been happening in Room 14 over the past few weeks. As per correspondence last week, our school is remaining open, but we are ensuring that the students are practicing good hygiene (ie. regular, thorough hand washing, sneezing into a tissue/elbow, not touching the face). I encourage you to reinforce these hygiene practices at home also, to ensure that our Wattle Grove Community stays fit and healthy. If your child has cold-like symptoms, please refrain from sending them to school and notify admin.

Thanks for your co-operations and support during this time,
Miss B 😊
