Green Thumbs

Last term, we planted some basil seedlings in our Room 14 garden. With a combined effort of some autumn rain and the loving care of our class gardeners, our basil plants have flourished. Yesterday the students got to pick some basil leaves to take home. They noticed the strong smell. We talked about some of the things we use basil for. Remember to rinse the basil leaves first.

Sharing Time

We have been working on developing reading fluency. Fluent readers read with volume and expression, paying careful attention to the punctuation. It is important to maintain a good pace- not too fast or too slow. Some of the Room 14 students are pictured below, sharing their narratives about a secret portal.

HASS- Past and Present

This term, we have begun our History unit and have been looking at ways things have improved and changed over time. This week we learnt about different forms of communication. We played a game of Charades and then talked about how communication can be verbal and non-verbal and that devices such as the telephone, computers etc. have made it easier for us to communicate with each other, even when far away. Students sorted images of various forms of communication into past and present categories. Some things, such as letters, are still used today, but just look a little different. We finished up with researching Alexander Graham Bell, who is most famous for inventing the telephone.

Congratulations

As assemblies are on hold at the moment, Mrs McIlwraith came to personally present our Merit Award winners with their certificates last Friday. Congratulations to Carter, Eli and Maahir. Room 14 also won a special Italian participation award! Congratulazioni!

Subtraction with Regrouping is as Easy as Can Be!

The students have been enjoying learning how to ‘self-talk’ through subtraction problems and apply these skills to solve word problems. We have also been learning to use Bar Models to visually represent subtraction problems.

Mother's Day

I hope all the mums enjoyed the gifts and cards that your children gave you for Mother’s Day. The students loved the guided drawing task! Mum’s really are magical and so I hope you all felt extra appreciated last weekend.

Sizzling Story Starts

In Writing, we have been working on our narrative skills. We have been trying to include figurative language, dialogue and imagery to hook our readers in to our stories.

Here are some students proudly showing off their Sizzling Starts for the prompt, ‘The Magic Tree.’
