Assembly Update

Hi everyone,
Just a reminder that our assembly is next Thursday. The costuming is black clothing (shirt and pants/skirt/shorts).The students have been given a copy of the song lyrics and poetry parts to take home for additional practice. I hope to see you there!
Miss B :)

Sensational Science

This term, we are doing a Chemical Science unit around the properties of objects and how they are affected by heating and cooling, leading into an exciting STEM project that will be happening later in the term. Watch this space. We have been learning the components of the investigation progress and having a go at conducting simple experiments; hypothesising, observing and recording our findings.

We will be doing our class assembly with Miss Zafinno's Year 3/4 class on Thursday, September 5th. More information to come. Watch this space!

HASS News: NAIDOC Celebration

Last week, we celebrated NAIDOC Week, kicking off with a special assembly. The students sung a beautiful song in the Aboriginal language that they had learnt in Music. Kate and Legacy were fortunate to be selected to start a Tucker Bush Garden (located near Room 16), where they planted some flowers and foods, native to WA. A big thank you to Mrs Yarran, who came and shared her culture with the students and to Legacy who showcased some dancing and his didgeridoo skills! We also joined with our K/PP buddies to do some fun NAIDOC activities.

Maths Masters

In Maths we have been learning about counting collections of money and change. In Maths rotations, the students enjoyed working in the “Room 14 Restaurant,” helping prepare a meal for King Ted. They had to look at the menu and select items within his budget, calculate the cost and write him a receipt and, of course, demonstrate excellent customer service. It is important for children to have real life experiences with Maths (eg. money and time), both at school and at home.

We are also focusing on mastering out times tables this semester. We have begun our Kung Fu Multiplication Challenge.  We began with the super easy White Belt (1 X table). In order to gain their next belt, students must complete an oral test with the tables in and out of order, demonstrating rapid recall. Then, each Friday, they complete a written test, which must be completed in under 5 minutes. Once students have passed both components, they move up to the next belt. Congratulations to Parker on being the first student to achieve his Yellow Belt.

Literacy Legends

This Term, Miss B has set the students the challenge of reading 20 stories. With the addition of some new release books to our classroom library, it has been pleasing to see the students devouring books! We have been learning about different genres and the students have been enjoying the opportunities to do a book talk on a book they have just completed. For a great example of a book talk, visit this YouTube channel:

Here are some snaps of the students in Room 14 being ‘caught’ reading!

Also very exciting is the upcoming Poetry Recital. Learning poetry is lots of fun and there are so many great poems out there! Next week, the students will be presenting a poem of their choice for the class to enjoy. Two class finalists will then be selected to participate in the Year Level Final. Just a reminder that the poem needs to be presented in an expressive, engaging way and be under 2 minutes long. Below is the timetable for presentations:

In writing, we have been revising the persuasive text structure and looking at ways to explain our ideas in more depth. The students have been doing team brainstorming to map out how simple ideas could be extended. The topic last week “Which School Subject is Most Important?”  led to some great discussion.

We have also been revising the grammatical components of an effective sentence and working on our letter formations and presentation standard.

Congratulations

The students in Room 14 are always working hard towards achieving their academic and personal goals, so this is a little celebration of what some of our classmates have achieved over the last month:
