WA Day

Last Friday, Wattle Grove Primary celebrated WA Day with a 'Design a Door Competition.' Each class researched a WA country town and designed an eye catching door display, presenting their findings.

Room 23 researched Wagin. Here are some of the facts we learnt:
  • Wagin has a giant ram statue. It attracts tourists. Luke
  • Wagin has a 50m swimming pool. Chinmayi
  • It is 228km from Perth. Hannah
  • They have a police force. Kalani

Spelling

Each week, the students learn five new 'Teacher Challenge' words during their Big Write session. The students practise saying and writing these words each day and learn their meaning. These will then appear at the bottom of their spelling list the following week. Exposing students to more complex vocabulary has seen a pleasing improvement in their oral language. The next step is for the students to transfer this vocabulary to their writing. Having a sophisticated written vocabulary is a key element of  becoming a successful writer, both now and in their future studies.

The 'Wow' words for Week 7 were:

intelligent- very smart
delighted- happy about something
extremely- very
terrible- really bad

atrocioushorrifying or unpleasant

Science Superstars Competition

Week 6 was filled with scientific fun as we held our Room 23 Science Superstars Competition. With so many awesome science experiments and presentations, it was so tricky to select just 2 winners, from each year level, to go through to the next stage of the competition!

After a student vote, the Year Two winners were Connor and Ava and the Year Three winners were Luke and Aliyah. These students will now go on to compete against the other class winners, from their respective year levels, for the chance to present their experiment at a whole school assembly. Good luck!

Congratulations to all the students. I was so impressed with your level of preparation and the confidence with which you presented. Thank you to all the parents for supporting this event. I appreciate all you do.

Miss B

Kindy Buddies

In Week 7, we went to visit our Kindy buddies again. We made volcanoes in their sandpit and were so excited to teach them about what happens when vinegar and bicarbonate soda mix together. Thanks to Mrs Harders and Mrs Chaplyn for setting up all the materials.

Simultaneous Storytime

On the 23rd of May, Room 23 celebrated National Simultaneous Storytime, alongside other schools all across Australia. We went to the official website to learn more about the authors of this year’s book, 'I Got This Hat.' Then we role played what type of hat we'd design and spoke about what it would do.

Fun with Mass

We had fun in Maths using the balance scale. We tried to estimate what objects in the classroom might weigh 500g, 1kg and 2 kg. Some of us were close with our predictions while others may have been a bit ambitious! We then learnt how to use a kitchen scale to more accurately find the mass of objects.

Science Update

In Science, we grew plants. The children worked with a partner for this experiment, deciding what they were going to change (amount of sunlight, water, location) and then observed and measured their plants each day. These were our findings:
  • The plants inside the cupboard, although taller, started to get yellow and droopy.
  • The plants that received sunlight however, were much greener.
  • The plants that received less water still grew.
  • The plants outside got a bit damaged due to strong wind, which knocked them out of their pots.
For a plant to stay alive, it needs soil, air, water, light and space to grow.
