Each week, the students learn five new 'Teacher Challenge' words during their Big Write session. The students practise saying and writing these words each day and learn their meaning. These will then appear at the bottom of their spelling list the following week. Exposing students to more complex vocabulary has seen a pleasing improvement in their oral language. The next step is for the students to transfer this vocabulary to their writing. Having a sophisticated written vocabulary is a key element of becoming a successful writer, both now and in their future studies.
The 'Wow' words for Week 7 were:
intelligent- very smart
delighted- happy about something
extremely- very
terrible- really bad
atrocious- horrifying or unpleasant
